Keeping positive in finding your purpose

If you are stuck in a rut in your career, between jobs or waiting for inspiration before you leap into self-employment, it’s quite probable that your morale will be fluctuating from euphoric highs to miserable lows.  Over time, the lows can become more common and it’s easy to become despondent.  This is perfectly normal and is a useful signal that you are close to depleting your energy reserves. It means you need to make a choice to do something different!

As we celebrate World Mental Health Day (10 October), it’s a useful time to consider how you can rebuild your reserves whilst finding your purpose.  At Devon Business & Education Trust, we love working with individuals who are seeking the next phase of their career as it is the point when possibilities are surfaced and opportunities identified.

So how do you keep your morale high whilst finding your mojo?  Have a think about the following:

  • Clarify your purpose.  Your purpose is where your passions and skills intersect with the jobs that the world demands, and what people will be prepared to pay for.  By going through this process, you should start to narrow down exactly what you love doing and imagine how you can make it part of your life!  This process is often best done with someone else but can be tremendously uplifting!
  • Start honing your passion.  Practice what you love!  By doing this you become better at the skills and people will start to notice you.  Find a forum where you publicise what you do so you can start finding the people who will appreciate it.
  • Make a plan.  Create a plan that will help you achieve your dream, with tangible actions and clear targets.  Share this plan with others who you trust so they can help you become accountable for achieving it.
  • Ask for help.  Internalising your frustrations will only depress your mood, so make sure you surround yourself with people who can provide support.  Talk to us at Devon Business & Education Trust so we can help you develop a workable plan.

If you are looking to make a transition to a new career, contact us at Devon Business & Education Trust on 01884 220150 or team@dbetrust.co.uk.  We can’t wait to hear from you!
